Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Prevention

As part of the traditional "Freshman Month" at Brest State Technical University, a preventive awareness session was held. Students from the Faculty of Economics met with Maksim Andreyevich Taras, an operative from the Cybercrime Prevention Department of the Criminal Police (Brest Regional Executive Committee’s Internal Affairs Directorate). The discussion focused on one of today's most pressing issues: "Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Prevention."

Maksim Andreyevich provided a detailed overview of the psychology behind online fraud. He explained to the students why even sensible people sometimes let their guard down and trust scammers posing as investigators or bank employees. The expert placed special emphasis on practical protective measures. An interactive workshop titled "How to Protect Yourself from Unwanted Messenger Calls" was conducted, covering privacy settings and the blocking of suspicious contacts. Additionally, Maksim Andreyevich reiterated several fundamental rules:

  • never share SMS codes or bank card details with third parties
  • use two-factor authentication for all important accounts
  • regularly update software on smartphones and computers
  • verify the authenticity of websites before entering personal data

Fraud on cryptocurrency exchanges was also discussed. The speaker warned about the risks of investing in dubious digital assets and highlighted the warning signs of Ponzi schemes masquerading as innovative startups. The session also covered fraudulent schemes used by criminals on popular online marketplaces.

Remember, your financial security depends entirely on your own vigilance. Do not let criminals exploit your emotions.
