On April 17, 2025, a solemn mourning ceremony of reburial of the remains of victims of the genocide of the Belarusian people committed by the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War took place at the Brest Garrison Cemetery.
The event was the result of a great deal of work to establish the historical truth, carried out by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Belarus. The remains of at least 38 people are buried there - Red Army soldiers and civilians, discovered on the territory of the former concentration camp "Red Barracks", located in the Rechitsa microdistrict.
The remains were found during the investigation of the criminal case on the genocide of the Belarusian people, initiated by the Prosecutor General's Office. Search work began in 2024 after human bones were discovered at a construction site.
Representatives of the authorities, military personnel, students, including students of the Brest State Technical University, schoolchildren and all concerned Belarusians gathered to honor the memory of the fallen defenders of the Fatherland and victims of the war, prisoners of fascist camps.
The event was attended by the Presidential Aide for the Brest Region Valery Vakulchik, Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Belarus Gennady Dysko, Mayor of Brest Sergei Lobodinsky and other heads of law enforcement agencies, representatives of the regional and city executive committees, clergy, veterans.
This event serves as evidence of the authorities' attention to preserving the memory of past events and perpetuating the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland.
